Thomas Alexander Ferguson Graham | Alone in London, 1894

Thomas Alexander Ferguson Graham (1840-1906) was born in Kirkwall, Orkney but moved to Edinburgh after the death of his father.

In January 1855 he enrolled as a student at the Trustees' Academy where he was a pupil of Robert Scott Lauder (1803-1869).

Fellow students under Lauder included William McTaggart, William Quiller Orchardson, John Pettie and George Paul Chalmers.

Christine Comyn è nata a Tielt, in Belgio nel 1957.

Ha frequentato la Sint-Lucas Academie di Gent.

Comyn è considerata una dei migliori pittori di acquarelli del suo tempo.

Ha frequentato la Scuola d'Arte dell'Università Nazionale di Codoba dove ha conseguito la laurea in Belle Arti in Pittura.

The subject of Batten's painting is taken from Book III of Edmund Spenser's "The Faerie Queene", which is devoted to the legend of Chastity. The twins Amoretta and Belphoebe were the daughters of the nymph Chrysogone. The two babies were adopted, Belphoebe by the goddess of the hunt Diana, and Amoretta by Venus, goddess of love. Venus conveyed Amoretta to the Garden of Adonis, her `joyous Paradise', the flowers of which "dame Nature doth her beautify, and decks the girlonds of her Paramoures". However, even here the "faire flowre of beautie fades away, as doth the lilly fresh before the sunny ray", for:

The Lamentation over the Dead Christ is a painting of the common subject of the Lamentation of Christ by the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli, finished around 1490-1492.

It is now in the Alte Pinakothek, in Munich.

The portrait shows the inert body of Christ surrounded by the Virgin, St. Peter, and Mary Magdalene, St. John the Evangelist, St. Jerome and St. Paul.

The pathetic expressions of the characters were a novelty in Botticelli's art: under the spiritual influence of Savonarola's preachings in Florence, which began around the time the work was executed, he started in fact to abandon the allegoric inspiration that had made him a favourite of the Medici court in favour of more intimate and painstaking religious reflection.

The Entry of the Crusaders in Constantinople / Entrée des Croisés à Constantinople or The Crusaders Entering Constantinople is a large painting by Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863).

It was commissioned by Louis-Philippe in 1838, and completed in 1840. Painted in oil on canvas, it is in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
