Frederick Childe Hassam (Dorchester, 17 ottobre 1859 - East Hampton, 27 agosto 1935) è stato un pittore impressionista Statunitense.

Conosciuto fin da giovane con il solo nome di Childe, lasciò gli studi prima di conseguire un diploma e iniziò a lavorare come intagliatore.

Frequentò un corso di disegno al Lowell Institute, divisione del MIT, e divenne membro del Boston Art Club. La sua carriera artistica iniziò con le attività di illustratore e pittore d'acquarello.

Dal 1882 Hassam organizzò le sue prime mostre pubbliche, dapprima assieme ad altri artisti, poi presentando solo le sue opere.

Theodore Earl Butler | Pittore Impressionista

Theodore Earl Butler (1861-1936), uno dei pittori Impressionisti più innovativi d'America, non ha ricevuto il riconoscimento che meritava durante la sua vita, poiché è stato quasi eclissato dal suo famoso suocero, Claude Monet.

Nato nel 1861, Butler si iscrisse all'Art Students League di New York, poi continuò i suoi studi presso varie accademie d'arte a Parigi.

Si recò per la prima volta a Giverny nell'estate del 1888, il villaggio che sarebbe diventato la Colonia degli Artisti Impressionisti.

Inizialmente ispirato da Monet, che vi si stabilì nel 1883, Butler scaturì dalla tavolozza del pittore francese, sviluppando una propria tecnica ed uno stile che prevede elementi del movimento Nabi: forme semplici, contorni pronunciati ed effetti spaziali appiattiti.

In passato l'artista dipingeva spazi interni, ora include una finestra aperta che funge da portale nello spazio al di là.

I suoi grandi dipinti ad olio spesso raffigurano soggetti abbastanza minimali, sedie e normali ambienti interni, tuttavia ciò che attrae molti spettatori è il misticismo evocato dal movimento dell'aria e dalla brezza dell'oceano attraverso le tende.

Sebbene non ci siano figure presenti nei suoi WindowScapes, è difficile negare le implicazioni di sedie vacanti in uno spazio così vuoto.

Abraham Mignon | Baroque still-life painter

The son of shopkeepers, Abraham Mignon (1640-1679) was born in Frankfurt and baptized in the Calvinist church on June 21, 1640.

When his parents moved to Wetzlar in 1649, Mignon was placed under the care and artistic apprenticeship of Jacob Marrel (1614-1681), a still-life painter and art dealer.

Marrell was undoubtedly impressed with Mignon’s abilities, for he entrusted his affairs to him whenever he was away in Holland on business.

Furthermore, Marrell asked Mignon to instruct his stepdaughter, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), in still-life painting.

By 1664 Marrell and Mignon had left Frankfurt for Utrecht, and in 1669 both were registered in the Saint Luke’s Guild there.

Lettere d'amore tra Virginia Woolf e Vita Sackville-West

Le più grandi lettere d'amore, non sono quelle scritte per il pubblico, ma quelle indirizzate ad un particolare cuore tremante, piene di ricordi e miracoli privati, scritte in tutte le lingue del mondo..

E sicuramente, tra i grandi amori della storia troviamo anche la corrispondenza passionale tra la scrittrice britannica Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) - simbolo della letteratura Britannica del XX secolo - e l'affascinante scrittrice britannica Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962) - 10 anni di meno dalla Woolf, Saffista, e proveniente da una famiglia aristocratica.

Virginia incontrò la Vita nel dicembre del 1922, ad una cena all'influente circolo intellettuale, noto come Bloomsbury Group, un collettivo di artisti, scrittori e pensatori radicali all'inizio del XX secolo.

Dopo, nel suo diario, Virginia scrisse che durante la cena, non prestò molta attenzione alla conversazione di Vita, ma alle sue gambe...

Frances (Fanny) Brawne Lindon (Londra, 1800-1865) è nota soprattutto per il suo fidanzamento con il poeta Britannico John Keats (Londra, 1795 - Roma, 1821), esponente del Romanticismo inglese. Questo fatto è rimasto sconosciuto fino al 1878, quando vennero pubblicate le lettere di Keats a lei indirizzate.

Il loro fidanzamento, durato dal dicembre 1818 fino alla morte di Keats nel febbraio del 1821, ha coinciso con gli anni artisticamente più prolifici del poeta.

Oreste Albertini | Divisionist painter

Oreste Albertini (1887-1953) was an Italian painter.

He first attended the Scuola Civica Pavese at Pavia, but at the age of 13 became an apprentice to the fresco artist Cesare Maroni.

Together they frescoed the church of Besano in Varese.

In 1910, he enrolled in night classes at the school of decoration at the Umanitaria of Milan and the Brera Academy, paying for his courses by decorative painting and working as a machinist at factories. In 1923, he exhibited at the Brera.

Nella sera del 28 marzo 1941, poco dopo l'alba devastante della seconda guerra mondiale, la scrittrice Britannica Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), ossessionata dai suoi fantasmi e da sempre incline alla depressione, si riempì di sassi le tasche del soprabito ed entrò nel fiume Ouse dietro la sua casa per non uscirne mai viva.

Prima di lasciarsi morire, Virginia Woolf scrive al marito Leonard Woolf (Scrittore, editore, giornalista e teorico politico Britannico, 1880-1969) una lettera struggente.

John La Farge (1835-1910)

Painter, stained glass designer. Among his many commissions, decoration of the Trinity Church in Boston placed La Farge at the forefront of the American Arts and Crafts movement.

He early admired the formality and patterning of Japanese art, and he recored his impressions of his travels in Asia in An Artist’s Letters from Japan (1897).

John La Farge was born in New York City, the son of prosperous French emigres, his father having been a refugee from the ill-fated Napoleonic expedition to San Domingo.

La Farge began drawing at an early age, had intermittent instruction, and graduated from the Roman Catholic Mount St. Mary’s College in Maryland.

Artemisia Gentileschi | Artistic importance

The research paper "Gentileschi, padre e figlia" (1916) by Roberto Longhi (Italian academic, art historian and curator, 1890-1970. The main subjects of his studies were the painters Caravaggio and Piero della Francesca) described Artemisia (1593-1652) as "the only woman in Italy who ever knew about painting, coloring, drawing, and other fundamentals".

Longhi also wrote of Judith Slaying Holofernes:

"There are about fifty-seven works by Artemisia Gentileschi and 94% (forty-nine works) feature women as protagonists or equal to men".

These include her works of Jael and Sisera, Judith and her Maidservant, and Esther. These characters intentionally lacked the stereotypical "feminine" traits - sensitivity, timidness, and weakness - and were courageous, rebellious, and powerful personalities (such subjects are now grouped under the name the Power of Women).

A nineteenth-century critic commented on Artemisia's Magdalene stating, "no one would have imagined that it was the work of a woman. The brush work was bold and certain, and there was no sign of timidness".

Elisabeth Warling | Genre painter

Swedish painter Elisabeth Warling (1858-1915) was the daughter of the confectioner Viktor Warling and Carin Sjögren.

Warling studied at the Technical School in Stockholm (1875-1877) and the Academy of Fine Arts 1877-1883 and abroad at, among others, the Académie Colarossi in Paris (1875–1887) after she was awarded a scholarship from the Academy of Fine Arts.

Her art consists mainly of genre and portrait paintings made in oil, gouache, watercolor or pencil drawings, but she also performed to a lesser extent figure studies and landscape depictions.

She participated in the Art Academy's Stockholm Exhibition in 1887, the Nordic exhibition in Copenhagen in 1888 and several of the Swedish Artists' Association's exhibitions in Stockholm from 1890, the Swedish General Art Association's December exhibition in 1911, the Swedish Artists Association's exhibitions in Stockholm in 1911 and in Lund in 1912 and The Baltic exhibition 1914.

Charlotte Wahlström | Landscape painter

Charlotte Constance Wahlström (1849-1924) was a Swedish painter.

Wahlström was born in the parish of Svärta in Södermanland, Sweden. She was the daughter of Anders Wahlström and Carolina Setterberg. She attended the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm.

She traveled on a scholarship to Paris, Brittany in 1885 and later to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

In 1889, she spent a period in the artist colony in Barbizon.

Wahlström exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois.

Viggo Johansen | Skagen painter

Viggo Johansen (1851-1935) was a Danish painter and active member of the group of Skagen Painters who met every summer in the north of Jutland.

He was one of Denmark's most prominent painters in the 1890s.

Early life and education

As a boy, Johansen already had a talent for drawing which was recognized by Wilhelm Marstrand.

He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1868-1875, specializing in figure painting, but did not pass the graduation examination.
