John Cooney is an artist from Carrickfergus. He paints in watercolour and oil.

- "I was born in Newry, Co. Down but have lived most of my life close to Belfast.

I went to art college in Belfast and Manchester, achieving a first class honours degree in illustration.

While at college, I won first prize at the North West Artists exhibition sponsored by BP.

After college I began exhibiting my paintings with Tom Caldwell Galleries and won awards at the Royal Ulster Academy (best painting as voted by the public and UTV award).

Despite my success in painting, I began working in advertising which left no time for my own art.

After further career moves in graphic design using IT, I began teaching various art classes.

I also began teaching in local primary schools.

I have now stopped teaching in order to devote myself entirely to painting.

I paint in both oil and watercolours, depending on the subject and have no preference.

I paint ordinary people in their environments and always try to make the commonplace interesting.

My work has recently been featured in Artists and Illustrators and The Artist magazines and last year, I exhibited at The Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall galleries, London.

I am currently exhibiting at this year's Royal Ulster Academy at the Ulster Museum, Belfast and have been awarded the watercolour prize.

I have also won two other prizes at the 2018 Ulster Watercolour Society exhibition.

In October 2018 I exhibited for the first time in The Watercolour Society of Ireland exhibition in Dublin and was awarded a major prize.

I will be exhibiting at The Mall Galleries, London for an Artist of the Year competition, sponsored by Artist and Illustrators, magazine".

"Sono un artista che vive a Carrickfergus, nell'Irlanda del Nord.

Sono nato a Newry, Co. Down, ma ho vissuto la maggior parte della mia vita vicino a Belfast.

Sono andato al college d'arte a Belfast e Manchester, ottenendo una laurea con lode in illustrazione.

Mentre ero al college, ho vinto il primo premio alla mostra North West Artists sponsorizzata da BP.

Dipingo sia ad olio che ad acquerello, a seconda del soggetto e non ho preferenze.

Dipingo persone comuni nei loro ambienti e cerco sempre di rendere interessanti i luoghi comuni.

Il mio lavoro è stato recentemente pubblicato sulla rivista The Artist e Artists and Illustrators.

Ho esposto alla Royal Society of Portrait Painters presso le gallerie Mall di Londra.

Ho vinto il premio acquerello alla Royal Ulster Academy, Belfast nel 2017 e l'anno scorso ho vinto il premio Whyte's auctioneers alla mostra Watercolor Society of Ireland a Dublino e mi è stato assegnato il secondo premio alla mostra Artist of the Year di quest'anno al Mall Galleries, Londra, sponsorizzato dalla rivista Artists and Illustrators.

Nel 2021 sono stato invitato ad esporre alla mostra internazionale dell'acquerello di Fabriano in Italia e ad esporre con l'International Watercolor Masters in Inghilterra quest'anno".
