Mihail Aleksandrov is one of the most influential and recognizable Russian painters in the world.

He is collected in more than 20 countries.

Aleksandrov was born in Vilnius, Lithuania.

He attended the Vilnius Art School classes for five years and then studied at the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute.

He received his degree in Russian Language and Literature in 1971.

Robert McGregor | Genre painter

His genre was particularly painting working men such as fishermen, shepherds, crofters, pedlars, and farm labourers.

However he also painted Scottish, French and Dutch country and coastal scenery.

Vadim Markevich, 1969

Vadim Markevich was born in Riga, Latvia.

He graduated from the Lyceum of Arts and Restoration in St. Petersburg, and has exhibited since 1994 in the State Museum of Modern Arts, Minsk.

He went on to study at the Royal College in London in 1999, where he received an expert assessment of his work by Sotheby's.

The artist describes his work as neoclassical; a return to the more traditional style of painting.

Thomas Faed RSA (1826-1900) was a Scottish painter.

Faed was born on 8 June 1826, at Barlay Mill in Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire, and was the brother of the artists James Faed, John Faed and Susan Faed.

He received his art education in the school of design, Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1849.

He went to London three years later, was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1861, and academician in 1864, and retired in 1893.

David FeBland, 1949

Felix Ehrlich | Genre painter

Felix Ehrlich (1866-1931) was a German portrait and genre painter.

Ehrlich studied painting at the Königsberg Art Academy under Carl Steffeck since 1883 and became his master student in 1888.

Back in Berlin he was appointed court painter in 1896.

In the same year he married Bertha Homoth.

"An old Woman called 'The Artist's Mother'" by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is a study in old age by a young, aspiring painter who rapidly gained a reputation for this kind of work before moving to Amsterdam to develop his career as a portraitist and history painter.

Executed towards the end of his time in Leiden (c.1629), this painting already reveals Rembrandt’s mastery of precise detail in the treatment of the folds of skin, the sunken eyes, the taut mouth and the prominent nose.

Umberto Veruda (1868-1904)

Umberto Veruda (Trieste, 1868-1904) was an Austro-Hungarian painter, known for his portraits and upper-class society scenes.

He was born to a family of modest means.

He was introduced to the art of painting by a local artist, originally from Bologna, named Raffaele Astolfi (1829-1900); known for portraits in the Academic style.

In 1884, at the age of sixteen, he went to Munich, where he was able to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts, where his fellow Triestini, Carlo Wostry and Isidoro Grünhut, were also studying.

John French Sloan (1871-1951) was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, the son of an amateur artist and occasional businessman.

In 1876 he moved with his family to Philadelphia and in 1884 enrolled in Central High School, where William Glackens (American, 1870-1938) and Albert Coombs Barnes were among his classmates.

In 1888 he began working for a bookseller and print dealer, and the following year he taught himself how to etch with the aid of Philip Gilbert Hamilton's The Etcher's Handbook.

Entrato in contatto con Picasso e Derain cominciò a dipingere paesaggi geometrizzati che vennero parzialmente rifiutati al Salon d'Automne nel 1908.

American painter Carla Louise Paine was educated in the traditions and techniques of classical oil painting in Florence, Italy.

There, at the Florence Academy of Art, she completed three years of intense study, spending her last trimester in 2010 in Sweden at the Academy’s Scandinavian branch.

Prior to that she studied at the highly regarded School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Carla has received numerous awards and recognition for her work including being two times awarded 'Best Nude' in the annual Art Renewal Center Salon as well as being awarded 'Collections Magazine Award' and the 'Duel Category Award'.

Edgardo Saporetti (1865-1909)

Edgardo Saporetti (Bagnacavallo, 1865 - Bellaria, 1909) was an Italian painter of eclectic subjects, including portraits, landscapes and genre subjects.

He was the son of Pietro Saporetti, painter and docent of the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna, and initially studied there.

At the age of 15 years, he traveled to Rome to work under Cesare Mariani, director of the Accademia di San Luca, then moved to Naples where he worked in the studio of Domenico Morelli.

Joseph-Marius Avy | Genre painter

Joseph-Marius Avy (1871-1939) was a French painter.

He painted landscapes, genre scenes, especially on the elegant Parisian environment and wall decorations.

He was also a skilled illustrator and an accomplished pastelist.

Joseph Marius Jean Avy, known as Marius Avy, was born in Marseille into a wealthy family. His father was a businessman.

After his first studies he manifested the desire to undertake the path of art, following his own inclinations.

He was therefore sent to Paris, where he was a pupil of Léon Bonnat and Albert Maignan.

From 1900 until 1933 he regularly exhibited at the Salon des artistes français and, from 1934-1939, the year of his death, at the "Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts".

In 1900 he won the Marie Bashkirtseff Prize, in 1903 he was awarded the second class medal and, in 1937, the "Diplôme d'honneur".

He was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion d'honneur and, ten years later, was promoted to Commander.

During the First World War he was decorated with the Cross of War.

In 1909 Avy married Germaine Besnard, daughter of the painter Albert Besnard, having as best man at the wedding the artist Henry Lerolle.

On this occasion he assisted his father-in-law in arranging the canvases that decorated the dome of the Petit Palais.

Albert Besnard portrayed him in uniform in a 1916 pastel.

Joseph Marius Avy often painted Italian landscapes.

Some of his compositions of worldly life, such as the Bal en blanc, painted with a particular harmony of very contrasting colors, can be considered apart for their distinct dynamism.

His decorations include the wedding hall of the Rotterdam Town Hall.
