Hermann Karl Hesse (1877-1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist and painter.

His best-known works include Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, each of which explores an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge and spirituality.

In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I am a star

I am a star in the firmament

that observe the world, despises the world

and consumed in its heat.

I am the sea by night in a storm

the sea shouting that accumulates new sins

and to the ancient makes recompense.

I am exiled from your world

of pride polite, by pride defrauded,

I am the king without crown.

I am the passion without words

without stones of the hearth, without weapons in the war,

is my same force that make me sick.

Ich bin ein Stern am Firmament,

Der die Welt betrachtet, die Welt verachtet,

Ich bin das Meer, das nächtens stürmt,

Das klagende Meer, das opferschwer
