Ernst Koerner (1846-1927) | Landscape painter

Ernst Karl Eugen Koerner was a German🎨 landscape painter.

In 1861, while still attending the public schools, he began working in the studios of Hermann Eschke, where he received most of his artistic education.

Later, he also worked for Karl Steffeck and Gottlieb Biermann.

He spent most of the two following decades travelling; to the North Sea, the Baltics, the Harz Mountains, France, England, Italy, Scotland and Spain.

From 1873-1886, he made numerous trips to Egypt and the Middle East, where he created some of his best known paintings.

In 1894, he was named a Professor and, from 1895-1899, was Chairman of the Verein Berliner Kunstler (Artists' Association).

In addition to his canvases, he painted altarpieces at the Erlöserkirche in Berlin-Rummelsburg.

He died at home, aged eighty, and is buried at the Luisenstädtischer Friedhof in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

His most popular paintings depict Egyptian architecture, often backed by striking, red sunsets.

Nel 1861, mentre ancora frequentava le scuole pubbliche, iniziò a lavorare negli studi di Hermann Eschke, dove ricevette la maggior parte della sua formazione artistica. Successivamente, ha lavorato anche per Karl Steffeck e Gottlieb Biermann.

Trascorse la maggior parte dei due decenni successivi viaggiando verso il Mare del Nord, i Paesi Baltici, i monti Harz, Francia, Inghilterra, Italia, Scozia e Spagna.

Dal 1873-1886 compì numerosi viaggi in Egitto ed in Medio Oriente, dove realizzò alcuni dei suoi dipinti più noti.

Nel 1894 fu nominato professore e, dal 1895-1899, fu presidente della Verein Berliner Kunstler (Associazione degli artisti).

Oltre alle sue tele, dipinse pale d'altare alla Erlöserkirche a Berlino-Rummelsburg.

Morì a casa, all'età di ottant'anni, ed è sepolto al Luisenstädtischer Friedhof a Berlino-Kreuzberg.

I suoi dipinti più popolari raffigurano l'architettura egizia, spesso sostenuta da suggestivi tramonti rossi.

Molte delle sue opere mostrano l'influenza di Eduard Hildebrandt.
