John Graham-Gilbert | Portrait painter

John Graham-Gilbert (1794-1866) was a Scottish portrait painter and art collector.

Graham-Gilbert was born in Glasgow as John Graham, the son of a West India merchant and was at first trained in his father's counting-house, but preferred art and travelled to London in 1818 where he was admitted into the Royal Academy.

In 1819 he won a silver medal for best drawing from the antique, and in 1821 a gold medal for his historical painting of "The Prodigal Son".

He established himself in London as a portrait-painter, and contributed to the exhibitions of the Royal Academy from 1820-1823.

He then went to Italy to study old masters of the Venetian school. He settled in Edinburgh in 1827, and sent a portrait to the first exhibition of the Royal Scottish Academy.

In 1834 he married the wealthy heiress Miss Jane Gilbert of Yorkhill. He added her name to his, and moved to her native Glasgow.

He remained an exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy, but from 1844 he also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He died at Yorkhill. | © Wikipedia

Graham-Gilbert nacque a Glasgow come John Graham, figlio di un commerciante dell'India occidentale, e dapprima fu addestrato nella casa dei conti di suo padre, ma preferì l'arte e viaggiò a Londra nel 1818 dove fu ammesso alla Royal Academy.

Nel 1819 vinse una medaglia d'argento per il miglior disegno dell'antico, e nel 1821 una medaglia d'oro per il suo dipinto storico di "Il figliol prodigo".

Si stabilì a Londra come ritrattista e contribuì alle mostre del Royal Accademia dal 1820-1823.

Poi andò in Italia per studiare i vecchi maestri della scuola veneziana.

Si stabilì ad Edimburgo nel 1827 e mandò un ritratto alla prima mostra della Royal Scottish Academy.

Nel 1834 sposò la ricca erede Miss Jane Gilbert di Yorkhill.

Ha aggiunto il suo nome al suo e si è trasferito nella sua nativa Glasgow.

Rimase espositore alla Royal Scottish Academy, ma dal 1844 espose anche alla Royal Academy di Londra. È morto a Yorkhill.
