William Jabez Muckley (1829-1905)

William Jabez Muckley was a noted English artist🎨 who was born at Wordsley, Kingswinford, in Staffordshire. He was the eldest of the seven children of Jabez Muckley who was a glass artisan.
William Jabez Muckley began his career as a glass cutter with W.H.B. and J.Richardson of Wordsley and became their principal designer and engraver.
When only 22, he was responsible for much of the engraving that earned the firm considerable praise in the Great Exhibition of 1851.


After the Richardson glass firm was declared insolvent in 1852 Muckley joined the Birmingham School of Art.
He won one of the eight scholarships competed for by students at all the art schools in Britain.
He went on to study in London and Paris and obtained four art degrees of the highest class.
He was head of the Burslem School of Art for five years in the late 1850s and then went on to be headmaster of Wolverhampton School of Art.
In 1862 he became principal of Manchester School of Art.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1859-1904 and at Suffolk Street, the Royal Institution and Grosvenor Gallery.


In 1878 he wrote "The Student's Manual of Artistic Anatomy", with 25 plates of the bones and surface muscles of the human figure, together with a description of the origin, insertion and use of the muscles, and in 1882 wrote "A Handbook for Painters and Art Students" about the character, nature and use of colours, their permanent or fugitive qualities and the proper vehicles to employ, also short remarks on the practice of painting in oil and water colours, and wrote two other books.
Muckley retired to White Notley Hall, Witham, Essex about 1900 and died at home in 1905. | © Wikipedia












William Jabez Muckley (23 marzo 1829-30 agosto 1905) è stato un noto artista Inglese🎨 nato a Wordsley, Kingswinford, nello Staffordshire. Era il maggiore dei sette figli di Jabez Muckley che era un artigiano del vetro.
William Jabez Muckley ha iniziato la sua carriera come tagliavetro con WHB e J. Richardson di Wordsley ed è diventato il loro principale designer ed incisore.
Quando aveva solo 22 anni, fu responsabile di gran parte dell'incisione che guadagnò all'azienda notevoli elogi nella Grande Esposizione del 1851.
Dopo che la ditta di vetro Richardson fu dichiarata insolvente nel 1852, Muckley si unì alla Birmingham School of Art.
Ha vinto una delle otto borse di studio a cui parteciparono studenti da tutte le scuole d'arte britanniche.
Ha continuato a studiare a Londra e Parigi e ha conseguito quattro lauree d'arte di altissimo livello.

Fu a capo della Burslem School of Art per cinque anni alla fine del 1850 e poi divenne direttore della Wolverhampton School of Art.
Nel 1862 divenne preside della Manchester School of Art.
Espone alla Royal Academy 1859-1904 ed alla Suffolk Street, alla Royal Institution ed alla Grosvenor Gallery.
Nel 1878 scrisse "The Student's Manual of Artistic Anatomy", con 25 tavole delle ossa e dei muscoli superficiali della figura umana, insieme ad una descrizione dell'origine, dell'inserimento e dell'uso dei muscoli, e nel 1882 scrisse "Un manuale per pittori e Studenti d'Arte" sul carattere, la natura e l'uso dei colori, le loro qualità permanenti o fuggitive ed i veicoli adeguati da impiegare, hanno anche brevi osservazioni sulla pratica della pittura con colori ad olio e ad acqua. Ha scritto altri due libri.
Muckley si ritirò a White Notley Hall, Witham, Essex verso il 1900 e morì a casa nel 1905.
