Maurice Leloir (1853-1940) Rococo painter

Maurice Leloir was a French🎨 illustrator, watercolourist, draftsman, printmaker, writer and collector.

Leloir was the son, and pupil, of painter Auguste Leloir and watercolorist Héloïse Suzanne Colin, daughter of painter Alexandre-Marie Colin.

Leloir married Céline Bourdier, with whom he had a daughter, Suzanne Leloir, who married Philippe, the son of Pauline Savari in 1912.

Leloir first exhibited his work at the Salon des artistes français, of which he became the secretary. With many other painters, he was a member of the Crozant School in the valleys of Creuse.

Around the 1890s, Leloir and his students flooded the picture book market, inspired by photographs representing accurately costumes and attitudes of the past, much appreciated by bibliophiles.

A prolific illustrator of books, especially for children, such as the Richelieu by Théodore Cahu, of magazines and fans, he founded the "Société d'histoire du costume" in 1907.

His brother, Alexandre-Louis Leloir, also an illustrator, was a well known painter.

In 1884, Guy de Maupassant dedicated him the short story Idylle.

Leloir era figlio e allievo del pittore Auguste Leloir e dell'acquarellista Héloïse Suzanne Colin, figlia del pittore Alexandre-Marie Colin.

Leloir sposò Céline Bourdier, con la quale ebbe una figlia, Suzanne Leloir, che sposò Philippe, figlio di Pauline Savari nel 1912.

Leloir espose per la prima volta il suo lavoro al Salon des artistes français, di cui divenne segretario. Con molti altri pittori, era membro della Scuola Crozant nelle valli di Creuse.

Intorno al 1890, Leloir ed i suoi studenti hanno invaso il mercato dei libri illustrati, ispirati da fotografie che rappresentano accuratamente costumi ed atteggiamenti del passato, molto apprezzati dai bibliofili.

Un prolifico illustratore di libri, in particolare per bambini, come il Richelieu di Théodore Cahu, di riviste e fan, ha fondato la "Société d'histoire du costume" nel 1907.

Suo fratello, Alexandre-Louis Leloir, anch'egli illustratore, era un noto pittore.

Nel 1884, Guy de Maupassant gli dedicò il racconto Idylle.
