Joseph Désiré Court (1797-1865)

Joseph-Désiré Court was a French painter🎨 of historical subjects and portraits.

Court was born at Rouen. He became a pupil at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gros, and after carrying off the principal honours there pursued his studies still further at Rome.

High expectations were formed of him when he exhibited in 1827 'The Death of Caesar', a work manifesting earnest thought, and a conscientious handling of the facts of history.

This is now preserved in the Louvre.

Having shown himself in this and other works a vigorous painter, capable of seizing a subject with a masterly grasp, and having also in the region of portrait painting proved himself an artist of no common merit, he eventually dissipated his talents in the production of a series of empty official pictures painted by order of Louis Philippe. He died in Paris in 1865.

Joseph-Désiré Court (14 settembre 1797 - 23 gennaio 1865) fu un pittore Francese🎨 di soggetti e ritratti storici. Court è nato a Rouen.

È diventato allievo presso l'École des Beaux-Arts sotto Gros, e dopo ha continuato i suoi studi a Roma.

Grandi aspettative si formarono da lui quando espose nel 1827 "La morte di Cesare", un'opera che mostrava un pensiero serio ed una gestione coscienziosa dei fatti della storia.

Questo è ora conservato al Louvre.

Dopo essersi mostrato in questa e in altre opere un pittore vigoroso, capace di afferrare un soggetto con una padronanza magistrale, e avendo anche nella regione della ritrattistica dimostrato di essere un artista senza merito comune, alla fine dissipò i suoi talenti nella produzione di un serie di quadri ufficiali per ordine di Luigi Filippo.

Morì a Parigi nel 1865. Il Museo di Bordeaux ha un suo ritratto di Henri Fonfrède; quella di Lione, una scena del Diluvio Universale; quello di Rouen, Boissy-d'Anglas, salutando la testa di Féraud.
