Auguste Veillon (1834-1890)

Louis-Auguste Veillon was a Swiss painter🎨, noted for his Orientalist works.

After obtaining a degree in Reformed theology in Lausanne, he joined François Diday at his studio in Geneva, where he primarily painted seascapes and mountain scenes from the Bernese Oberland.

In 1858, he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

While in Paris, he spent a considerable amount of time in the Louvre, copying the works of the masters, especially the 17th-century Dutch masters and the work of Claude Lorrain🎨.

He later reported that this discipline led him to the luminism characteristic of his paintings.

In Paris, he made the acquaintance of the Orientalist artist, Eugène Fromentin who was his neighbour. This marked a turning point in Veillon's work and aroused his interest in Orientalist subject matter.

He traveled to Rome, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Egypt, then lived in Venice for two years, before settling down in Geneva.

Veillon travelled to Egypt at least four times. In 1873, he stayed there with his friend, the artist, Etienne Duval (1824-1919), for a period of four months.

In Egypt, he focussed on producing work with Orientalist themes, featuring landscapes showing the Nile or the Dead Sea. His works were very popular, especially in Switzerland.

Dopo essersi laureato in teologia riformata a Losanna, si unisce a François Diday nel suo studio a Ginevra, dove dipinge principalmente paesaggi marini e scene di montagna dell'Oberland bernese.

Nel 1858, si iscrisse all'Ecole des Beaux-Arts di Parigi.

Mentre era a Parigi, trascorse una considerevole quantità di tempo al Louvre, copiando le opere dei maestri, in particolare i maestri olandesi del 17° secolo e l'opera di Claude Lorrain🎨.

In seguito ha riferito che questa disciplina lo ha portato al luminismo caratteristico dei suoi dipinti.

A Parigi, conobbe l' artista orientalista, Eugène Fromentin che era suo vicino. Ciò segnò una svolta nel lavoro di Veillon e suscitò il suo interesse per la materia orientalista.

Ha viaggiato a Roma, nei Paesi Bassi, in Svizzera e in Egitto, quindi ha vissuto a Venezia per due anni, prima di stabilirsi a Ginevra.

Veillon viaggiò in Egitto almeno quattro volte. Nel 1873, rimase lì con il suo amico, l'artista, Etienne Duval (1824-1919), per un periodo di quattro mesi.

In Egitto, si è concentrato sulla produzione di lavori con temi orientalisti, con paesaggi che mostrano il Nilo o il Mar Morto.

Le sue opere erano molto popolari, soprattutto in Svizzera.

Sebbene viaggiò molto, Ginevra rimase al centro della sua vita e del suo lavoro. Muore lì il 5 gennaio 1890 all'età di 65 anni.
