John Constable RA (1776-1837) | Clouds study

John Constable, RA was an English🎨 landscape painter in the naturalistic tradition.

Constable considered the sky of paramount importance to landscape painting, and in a letter of 1821 to his close friend John Fisher, he wrote:

‘It will be difficult to name a class of landscape in which the sky is not the keynote, the standard of scale, and the chief organ of sentiment … The sky is the source of light in Nature, and governs everything’.

Clouds is one of around fifty extant paintings of the sky which Constable made in Hampstead, between 1821 and 1822, and it has been speculated that he produced more than one hundred such studies at the time.

John Constable (East Bergholt, 11 giugno 1776 - Londra, 31 marzo 1837) è stato un pittore Inglese🎨, considerato insieme a William Turner uno dei massimi paesaggisti del Romanticismo.

Constable considerava il cielo di fondamentale importanza per la pittura di paesaggio, ed in una lettera del 1821 al suo caro amico John Fisher, scrisse:

"Sarà difficile definire la classe di paesaggio in cui il cielo non è la nota dominante, lo standard di scala, e l'organo principale del sentimento ... Il cielo è la fonte della luce nella Natura e governa tutto'.

Tra il 1821-1822 Constable dipinse ad Hampstead circa cinquanta tele con studi del cielo anzi, è stato ipotizzato che abbia prodotto più di cento studi del genere all'epoca.

Constable fece il suo esame intenso, che chiamò "skying", per registrare precisamente condizioni meteorologiche e atmosferiche diverse, in preparazione dei suoi grandiosi paesaggi.
