George Sheridan Knowles (1863-1931)

Il pittore Britanico⏩ George Sheridan Knowles ha prodotto tele dai temi nostalgici, spesso in costume, con l'intento di evocare tempi e sentimenti trascorsi, tra cui i primissimi, timidi approcci dettati dalla passione, ma soprattutto l'ingenuità legata all'infanzia, e proprio per questo sua ricorrente romantica nostalgia fu molto apprezzato già in epoca vittoriana.

Egli studiò arte presso la Manchester School of Art ed alla Royal Academy Schools, per giungere a dipingere sia tele accademiche che nostalgiche, ravvivate da colori luminosi e da un leggero tocco di pennello che proprio in quegli anni stava sperimentando l'impressionismo che, sfumando la scena, giunge ad acuirne il carattere evocativo.

Nel 1885, Knowles si era già trasferito a Londra quando le sue più grandi opere venivano esibite alle più famose mostre; divenne membro del Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, del Royal Institute of Painters in Oil Colours, del Royal Cambrian Academy, così come della Royal Society of British Artists, trovando così la meritata gratificazione quando ancora era in vita.

Tra il 1885-1893 espose alla Royal Academy, alla Suffolk Street Gallery ed al Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors e ricevette un encomio⏩ dalla giuria all'Esposizione Universale di Parigi del 1900.

The artist was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and an associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy in Manchester.

Between 1885-1893 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Suffolk Street Gallery and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and was awarded⏩ a jury commendation at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900.

There can be no doubt that people in the late 19th century looked back at the previous century with great interest and artists such as Knowles catered for this fascination.

He captured well some of the aspects of the bygone era with sensitivity and skill.

Knowles died on March 15, 1931 in London, United Kingdom.
