Herbert Gustave Schmalz (1856-1935) che si è nominato Herbert Gustave Carmichael nel 1918, era un pittore Inglese. È annoverato tra i Preraffaelliti.
Schmalz è nato in Inghilterra come figlio di un padre tedesco e madre inglese. Ha ricevuto una formazione convenzionale in pittura, prima alla South Kensington Art School e successivamente alla Royal Academy of Arts, dove ha studiato con Frank Dicksee, Stanhope Forbes ed Arthur Hacker. Ha perfezionato i suoi studi ad Anversa presso la Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
Dopo il suo ritorno a Londra si è fatto un nome come pittore di storia, con uno stile influenzato dai preraffaelliti e dall'orientalismo. Nel 1884 espose con successo la sua pittura Too Late alla Royal Academy.
Dopo un viaggio a Gerusalemme nel 1890 realizzò una serie di dipinti con temi del Nuovo Testamento, con Return from Calvary (1891) uno dei più noti.
Dopo il 1895 Schmalz dipinse sempre di più dei ritratti. Nel 1900 ha tenuto una grande mostra personale intitolata "A Dream of Fair Women" nella Fine Art Society in Bond Street.
Schmalz era amico di William Holman Hunt, Val Prinsep e Frederic Leighton. Nel 1918, dopo che la Germania fu sconfitta durante la prima guerra mondiale, cambiò il suo nome in Herbert Gustave Carmichael.

Schmalz was born in England as the son of a German father and an English mother. He received conventional education in painting, first at the South Kensington Art School and later at the Royal Academy of Arts, where he studied with Frank Dicksee, Stanhope Forbes and Arthur Hacker. He perfected his studies in Antwerp at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
After his return to London he made a name for himself as a history painter, with a style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and orientalism. In 1884 he successfully exhibited his painting Too Late at the Royal Academy.
After a voyage to Jerusalem in 1890 he made a series of paintings with New Testament topics, with Return from Calvary (1891) one of the best known.
