Vincent Van Gogh | A Girl in White in the Woods, 1882

Girl in White in the Woods is an oil painting created in 1882 by Vincent van Gogh.
Of a study that Van Gogh made for Girl in a Wood or Girl in White in the Woods, he remarked at how much he enjoyed the work and explains how he wishes to trigger the audience's senses and how they may experience the painting:

"The other study in the wood is of some large green beech trunks on a stretch of ground covered with dry sticks, and the little figure of a girl in white. There was the great difficulty of keeping it clear, and of getting space between the trunks standing at different distances - and the place and relative bulk of those trunks change with the perspective - to make it so that one can breathe and walk around in it, and to make you smell the fragrance of the wood".

Ragazza in un bosco (in olandese Meisje in het bos) è un dipinto ad olio su tela di Vincent van Gogh, di 39x59 cm, eseguito nell'agosto 1882 a L'Aia, e conservato nel museo Kröller-Müller di Otterlo. Il dipinto non è firmato.

Con la fine del 1881, ma soprattutto col 1882 Van Gogh passa dal semplice disegno al dipinto, convinto che:

« il cielo, la terra, il mare richiedono l’uso del pennello nel senso che, se si vuole rappresentarli attraverso il solo disegno, è indispensabile saper usare il pennello con la sensibilità che questo mezzo richiede. » - Lettera 223 al fratello Théo van Gogh.

Per esercitarsi trova una ricca fonte di soggetti nei paesaggi attorno a L'Aja, in particolare nei boschi, “già molto autunnali”.

Uno dei paesaggi di questo periodo è questa scena del bosco: una ragazza vestita di bianco appoggiata ad un grosso tronco di albero, un tappeto di foglie che coprono il terreno. Per essere vendibile, il pittore lo carica di luminosità, per essere certo che “si può respirare in esso, e camminarvi e sentire l'odore del bosco”. Nella stessa lettera al fratello Théo, Vincent traccia uno schizzo del dipinto.
