Jeanne-Rachel, known as Minette, was born in 1865 and died at Pontoise on 6 April 1874.
She was a sickly child and treated by Dr Paul Gachet.
In this portrait, painted when she was eight, the subdued colouring and tentative handling give an added intimacy to the scene.
She holds a Japanese fan, reflecting her father's increasing interest in Japanese art.

Jeanne-Rachel, nota come Minette, nacque nel 1865 e morì a Pontoise il 6 aprile 1874.
Era una bambina malaticcia e fu curata dal dottor Paul Gachet.
In questo ritratto, dipinto quando aveva otto anni, la colorazione tenue e la manipolazione esitante conferiscono un'intimità aggiunta alla scena.
Tiene in mano un ventaglio giapponese, a testimonianza del crescente interesse del padre per l'arte giapponese.
