Edgar Degas | Before the Performance, 1896

This is a relatively small canvas for Degas’s late work, and indeed, some of the dancers’ poses look back to his earlier ballet pictures from the 1870s.

Here, a group of dancers are on stage preparing themselves for the impending performance: they practise their positions and one ballerina stoops to tie her shoe.

The dancers are not individuals, but faceless memories of a scene he had once observed.

The vivid colours are vibrant and unrealistic, evoking the surreal effects produced by the gas lights of the theatre.

Pools of shadow on the large expanse of stage are also rather abstract, and it is clear that by the late 1890s, Degas was far less concerned with naturalism than in his former years.

Si tratta di una tela relativamente piccola per gli ultimi lavori di Degas e, in effetti, alcune pose dei ballerini ricordano i suoi primi quadri di balletto degli anni '70 dell'Ottocento.

Qui, un gruppo di ballerini è sul palco e si prepara per lo spettacolo imminente: si esercita nelle posizioni e una ballerina si china per allacciarsi la scarpa.

I ballerini non sono individui, ma ricordi senza volto di una scena che aveva osservato una volta.

I colori vividi sono vibranti ed irrealistici, evocando gli effetti surreali prodotti dalle luci a gas del teatro.

Anche le pozze d'ombra sulla grande distesa del palco sono piuttosto astratte, ed è chiaro che alla fine degli anni Novanta dell'Ottocento Degas era molto meno interessato al naturalismo rispetto ai suoi anni precedenti.
