Edvard Munch | Evening, 1888

From very early on in his career Edvard Munch aimed to convey the angst and isolation characteristic of modern man. Evening reflects these interests.

It is considered to be the artist’s first treatment of the subject of melancholy and also looks forward to his more characteristic Symbolist compositions.

Munch used his sister Laura as a model on numerous occasions.

In this canvas she is depicted seated and in profile, in front of the house on the Norwegian fjord where they spent the summer of 1888. Her body occupies the foreground, albeit located on the far left-hand side and truncated at the bottom and on the left side.

Laura gazes towards the fjord, whose waters are to be seen on the far right, but shows no interest in the two country people who have hauled in a boat in the middle-ground. Fin dall'inizio della sua carriera, Edvard Munch ha cercato di trasmettere l'angoscia e l'isolamento caratteristici dell'uomo moderno.

La sera riflette questi interessi. È considerato il primo trattamento dell'artista sul tema della malinconia e attende anche le sue più caratteristiche composizioni simboliste. Munch ha usato sua sorella Laura come modella in numerose occasioni.

In questa tela è raffigurata seduta e di profilo, davanti alla casa sul fiordo norvegese dove trascorsero l'estate del 1888.

Il suo corpo occupa il primo piano, seppur situato all'estrema sinistra e troncato in basso e in basso. il lato sinistro. Laura guarda verso il fiordo, le cui acque si vedono all'estrema destra, ma non mostra alcun interesse per i due contadini che hanno tirato una barca in mezzo alla terraferma.

Munch originariamente dipinse in altre due figure, ma in seguito le eliminò per enfatizzare la solitudine della figura principale.
