Cornelis Cornelisz (1562-1638) | Mannerist painter

Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem - Dutch🎨 Golden Age painter and draughtsman, was one of the leading Northern Mannerist artists in the Netherlands, and an important forerunner of Frans Hals🎨 as a portraitist.

Together with Carel van Mander, Hendrick Goltzius and other artists, he started an informal drawing school that has become known in art history circles as the Haarlem Academy or "Haarlem Mannerists".

Probably this was a very informal grouping, perhaps meeting to draw models, and certainly to exchange artistic views.

Corneliszoon also played a role in the failed attempt to make a new charter for the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1630, which tried to raise the status of the artists.

His registered pupils were Salomon de Bray, Cornelis Jacobsz Delff, Cornelis Engelsz and Gerrit Pietersz Sweelink.

Among his students was Cornelis Claesz Heda (brother of Willem Claeszoon Heda), who seems to have exported Cornelisz' particular brand of mannerism to India, where he was active at the court of the sultan of Bijapur.

Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (Haarlem, 1562 - 11 novembre 1638) è stato un pittore Olandese🎨, tra i più noti esponenti del Manierismo dei Paesi Bassi, ed un importante predecessore di Frans Hals🎨.

Cornelis Cornelisz fu un membro della scuola del Manierismo di Haarlem, che fu influenzata soprattutto dalle opere di Bartholomeus Spranger🎨.

Egli dipinse numerosi ritratti, alternati a numerosi episodi mitologici e biblici.

Inizialmente Cornelisz realizzò opere a grandi dimensioni, con figure eccezionalmente grottesche, quasi innaturali.

Più tardi le sue opere acquistarono una carattere più naturalistico.

Quando i suoi genitori lasciarono Haarlem nel 1572, Corneliszoon vi rimase e fu assunto dal pittore Pieter Pietersz, suo primo maestro.

Più tardi, Cornelisz studiò a Rouen, in Francia e ad Anversa, in Belgio.
