The painting Притихло" ("hushing" or "silencing", before the storm) display at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, is a masterpiece of Nikolay Nikanorovich Dubovskoy / Николай Никанорович Дубовской (1859-1918), a Russian landscape painter, associated with the Peredvizhniki (The Itinerants) - group of Russian realist artists who formed an artists' cooperative in protest of academic restrictions; it evolved into the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions in 1870.

The artist's most famous and landmark painting, which placed his name among the most famous Russian landscape painters.

It marked the beginning of the "Landscape of Mood" genre, developed by Nikolay Dubovskoy and Isaac Levitan.

The painting was presented at the 18th exhibition of the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki), which opened in February 1890 in St. Petersburg.

The painting was exhibited with great success and was purchased by Tsar Alexander III for his collection at the Winter Palace.

Immediately after this, Pavel Tretyakov, who also wanted to acquire this painting, commissioned an original copy. This copy is now kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Isaac Levitan: "Non tutti possono trasmettere una tale cattura della natura stessa, come "La calma prima della tempesta", dove non ti senti l'autore, ma gli elementi stessi".

Il dipinto "Silenzio" (russo: Притихло) o "La calma prima della tempesta" - conservato al Museo Statale Russo di San Pietroburgo, è un capolavoro di Nikolay Nikanorovich Dubovskoy / Николай Никанорович Дубовской (1859-1918), pittore paesaggista Russo, associato ai Peredvizhniki - un gruppo di artisti realisti russi che protestarono contro le restrizioni accademiche e che formarono una cooperativa che evolvette nella società per mostre itineranti nel 1870, chiamata anche "Compagnia delle esposizioni di arte itinerante".

Questo dipinto, il più famoso ed emblematico dell'artista, collocò il suo nome tra i più famosi paesaggisti russi.

Segno anche l'inizio del genere "Landscape of Mood", sviluppato da Nikolay Nikanorovich Dubovskoy ed il grande Isaac Levitan.

Il "Silenzio" fu presentato alla diciottesima mostra della Società delgli Itineranti (Peredvizhniki), inaugurata nel febbraio 1890 a San Pietroburgo.

Il dipinto fu esposto con grande successo. Venne acquistato dallo zar Alessandro III per la sua collezione al Palazzo d'Inverno.

Nel 1897, anno della fondazione del Museo Statale Russo di San Pietroburgo, venne trasferito nella sua collezione.

Anche Pavel Tretyakov ne ordinò una copia originale, conservata ora presso la Galleria Statale Tretyakov di Mosca.
