Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (Symbolist painter, 1871-1950)

Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola was a French painter🎨. He is known for his pioneering leadership of the Camoufleurs (the French Camouflage Department) in World War I.

De Scévola was a student of Fernand Cormon and Pierre Dupuis at the École des beaux-arts de Paris.

De Scévola was a pastellist, remarkable for his silky, velvety and smooth style.

"Making his only aesthetic concern accuracy of the most naked kind" (E. Benézit), he left an extensive body of work including scenes of alcoves, landscapes, flowers and society portraits.

However his Symbolist-inspired works are particularly esteemed. He exhibited at the Salon🎨 des artistes français.

De Scévola was a member of the Société des Pastellistes Français and the Comité de la Société des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

He was made an Officer of the Légion d'honneur in 1914, by which time he was known as an elegant society portrait artist.

Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola (Sète, 14 novembre 1871 – Parigi, 29 marzo 1950) è stato un pittore e disegnatore Francese🎨.

Pittore amante del pastello, diede ai suoi dipinti una tattilità setosa e vellutata, pregevolissima, che derivava dalla raffinata tecnica di cui era padrone. I suoi quadri di ispirazione simbolista sono particolarmente apprezzati.

Fu pittore di fiori, di nature morte, di scene d'alcova e anche di paesaggi, ma Guirand de Scévola fece anche una solida carriera di ritrattista, eseguendo, fra molti altri, i ritratti del duca di Massa e delle duchesse di Uzès e di Brissac.

Né trascurò di raffigurare le scene mondane che la moda degli anni che seguirono la guerra imponeva. È noto anche per aver inventato e realizzato la mimetizzazione o camuffamento degli apparati bellici.
