Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Vincent van Gogh was the son of a minister and a preacher himself for a while.

After he was dismissed in 1880 from his position as preacher in the poor mine region of Borinage in Belgium, he chose the life of an artist.

Until 1886 Van Gogh wandered round the Netherlands. His paintings from this period are dark in tone and examples of the difficult life of a peasant.

In 1886, Van Gogh left for Paris where his brother Theo had a gallery. He got to know artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Seurat and Gauguin, and these had considerable influence on his work. His colour palette became lighter and he experimented with an impressionistic style of painting.

In 1888, Van Gogh settled in Arles; his friend Gauguin would later follow him there.

Here, Van Gogh's mental health deteriorated, which led, among other things, to the famous incident when he cut off a piece of his ear.

Vincent van Gogh è stato figlio di un ministro e lui stesso predicatore per un periodo.

Dopo essere stato licenziato nel 1880 dal suo incarico di predicatore nella povera regione mineraria del Borinage in Belgio, scelse la vita di un artista.

Fino al 1886 Van Gogh vagò per i Paesi Bassi.

I suoi dipinti di questo periodo sono di tono cupo ed esempi della vita difficile di un contadino.

Nel 1886 Van Gogh partì per Parigi dove suo fratello Theo aveva una galleria.

Conobbe artisti come Toulouse-Lautrec, Seurat e Gauguin, e questi ebbero una notevole influenza sul suo lavoro. La sua tavolozza di colori è diventata più chiara e ha sperimentato uno stile di pittura impressionista.

Nel 1888 Van Gogh si stabilì ad Arles; il suo amico Gauguin lo avrebbe poi seguito lì.

Qui, la salute mentale di Van Gogh è peggiorata, il che ha portato, tra le altre cose, al famoso incidente in cui si è tagliato un pezzo di orecchio.
